Go to Hell
Go to Hell
Go to Hell takes you to 37 real places on earth that people have called the gates of hell: burning craters and smoking volcanoes, flooded caves and sulphur lakes, haunted castles, ancient temples, and a few villages that simply bear the name.
Some are famous, like Turkmenistan’s ever-burning Darvaza Gas Crater, the “Door to Hell”. Some are sacred, like Mount Osore in Japan or St Patrick’s Purgatory in Ireland. Some are just an address: Hell, Michigan; Hell, Norway; Hell, Grand Cayman. All of them are real, and every one is on the map.
A New Gate Every Day
Open the app, or glance at your Home Screen, and meet the Gate of the Day: a different gate of hell every day, with its picture, place and story.
Drawn Like a Medieval Woodcut
Every gate is an original illustration in the style of a medieval woodcut, framed in a gold gothic arch. No stock photos, no filler.
Every Gate Has a Story
Read the myths, legends and history behind each place: the Greek river where Charon ferried the dead, the Roman crater lake where Aeneas went down to the underworld, the Maya caves of Xibalba, the boiling “hells” of Japan, and a Czech castle said to be built over a bottomless pit. Every story links to its sources, so you can read further without leaving the app.
All of Hell on One Map
See all 37 gates pinned across 22 countries. Tap a pin to open its page, see how far it is from you, open it in Apple Maps for directions, or share it with a friend.
How Far Is Hell from You?
Sort the gates by name, by country, or nearest first, and find out which gate is closest to home.
Before You Go
Each gate tells you whether it is open to visitors or only by guided or limited access, and adds safety notes where they matter. Places of worship and remembrance are marked, with a reminder to visit quietly and follow local custom.
